History of IELTS

Cambridge English Language Assessment (formerly known as UCLES) and the British Council jointly created the English Language Testing Service (IELTS) in 1980. It had a unique format that reflected current trends in language learning and instruction, such as the rise of "communicative" language learning and "English for Specific Purposes." The purpose of the test assignments was to reflect how English is used in the "real world."

During the 1980s, test taker numbers were low (4,000 in 1981, rising to 10,000 in 1985), and giving the test was challenging. As a result, the IELTS Revision Project was established to supervise the test's redesign. To ensure international participation in the redesign, the International Development Program of Australian Universities and Colleges (IDP), now known as IDP: IELTS Australia, teamed up with Cambridge English Language Assessment and the British Council to form the international IELTS partnership that continues to deliver the test today. The new name for the exam reflected this multinational collaboration: The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a system that assesses(IELTS).

In 1989, IELTS went live. Two non-specialized modules, Listening and Speaking, and two specialized modules, Reading and Writing, were given to test takers. The number of test takers increased by about 15% per year, and by 1995, there were 43,000 test takers in 210 test centers throughout the world. IELTS was revised again in 1995 other revisions went live in 2001 (revised Speaking Test) and 2005 (new assessment criteria for the Writing test.

The speaking module is an important part of the IELTS exam. It takes the shape of a one-on-one conversation with an examiner. While the test taker is speaking, the examiner evaluates him or her. The speaking session is also taped for monitoring and re-marking in the event of a challenge to the score.

In order to reduce linguistic prejudice, test materials included a diversity of accents and writing styles. In the listening test, 80 percent of the accents are British, Australian, or New Zealander, with the other 20% being from other countries.
